Two Bordertown Zen Do Kai club students successfully graded through to their next rank at a grading held at Adelaide High School gym, on Saturday 29th May, 2010. Tyson Brown moved from Shodan Ho to full Shodan and Peter Jolly from brown belt to black (Shodan Ho).
Peter was assisted by Scott Box and Tyson Brown and he pushed himself to achieve a strong grading.
Tyson had a busy day, successfully completing his First Dan grading, assisting Peter and grading a green belt student as well.
Past Bordertown club members Peter Colotti, Nigel Fuss and Robert Mock attended to watch the grading, with Bordertown’s Shihan Terry Hutchings who helped run proceedings. Sensei Ann-Elisa Pickering, also from Bordertown, assisted with the junior gradees.

Bordertown Karate Club Juniors Attend Adelaide Tournament

On Sunday 16th May, 2010, five junior members of the Bordertown Zen Do Kai Karate Club, attended a State tournament held at Adelaide High School Gym. They were accompanied by instructors Sensei Ann-Elisa Pickering and Sensei Robyn Miles, their parents and Shodan Ho Tyson Brown.
The day began at 10am, with the over sixty participants from all over the State put into appropriate divisions. Four rings ran all day, with students able to compete in free sparring, ground fighting, take downs and stick fighting.
A large crowd of parents and club members attended to watch, with over twenty higher ranked adult students and instructors acting as corner judges, referees, time keepers and point scorers.
This ‘Four Seasons’ style of tournament was being trialed by the South Australian Steering Committee of Zen Do Kai and while it ran to plan, some issues, including running out of time to finish all bouts, will need to be ironed out before the next tournament is held.
Bordertown students did well, representing their club and bringing home three division trophies from the day. One of these was won by default, as there were no other students of the right age or rank for one of our junior black belts, Isabella Pickering to compete against. Blue belt Natasha Horne and orange belt Anna Crafter, won their division trophies. Jake Turnbull and Paris Pickering also competed all day, with Jake performing particularly well in the free sparring, placing second in that discipline with a well controlled display.

At the State Grading held in Adelaide on 28th November 2009, two members of the Bordertown adult class, Tyson Brown and Scott Box, successfully obtained their black belts. In one of the largest groups to grade in recent years and partnered by Robyn Miles and Daryl Nicholls, both students performed well in a long and gruelling test of both their skill and endurance. State trophies were awarded after the grading, with Tyson Brown receiving the coveted Black Belt of the Year, a reflection of his dedication to martial arts training over many years.
Junior class member Tilley Wigney received the 2009 Tournament Trophy for her age division, which she earned by being placed first in each of the three tournaments held during the year.
Senior Class Trophies, donated by Tatiara Freight, were awarded after the final class for the year on 7th December, at a supper held at the Chinese Restaurant. Recipients were; Peter Jolly, Hardest Trained, Paul Excel, Most Improved.
Sempai Robert Mock then addressed the group and announced that after ten years of dedicated training, his other commitments didn’t allow him to
continue to train regularly. As one of the club stalwarts, he will be missed.
At the Bordertown Junior Club Grading held on 9th December, ten students graded through to their next belt level. Shodan Ho Tyson Brown chanted this grading, assisted by Sensei’s Ann-Elisa Pickering and Robyn Miles. Keely Abbot moved from Junior Shodan Ho rank to Junior Shodan, (First Degree Black Belt) and Emily Beck and Lucy Creaser moved from Brown to Black Belt showing great focus. Charlie Watts, Joe Watts, Paris Pickering and Jake Turnbull achieved their Blue Belts in a very strong display. Anna Crafter also graded very well and moved from Yellow to Orange Belt. Two of the youngest students, Ruby Glancy and Thomas Bryant coped well and received their Yellow Belts. Junior class members who were not grading themselves, helped with all other tasks admirably.
After the grading Junior Class presentations were made to: Keely Abbot and Emily Beck, Hardest Trained, Joe Watts and Natasha Horne, Instructor’s Awards, Aaron Beck, Paris Pickering, Patricia Garcia and Connor Evans, Attendance Merit awards. Trophies were generously donated by Bordertown Hardware, who support the Karate Club throughout the year.
The whole Junior class and their families then enjoyed pizza and drinks outside before breaking for the holidays.
