Glenelg River One of Four International River Foundation Finalists

Friday 1st August 2014
International River Foundation has announced four finalists in the 2014 Thiess International Riverprize.

The finalists are Glenelg River (Australia), Petitcodiac River (Canada), San Antonio River (USA) and the River Rhine (Europe – all countries within catchment).

The International RiverFoundation will announce the winner at the Riverprize Gala Dinner on Tuesday 16 September, at the National Convention Centre, Canberra, during the 17th International Riversymposium.

Dr Nick Schofield, CEO of the International River Foundation, said that finalists in the Riverprize showcase the best of the best in river management globally.

“These finalists demonstrate the incredible achievements that are possible when a dedicated group of people makes a commitment to caring for their river.”

“It is increasingly important that we learn to manage freshwater resources sustainably, so it is encouraging to see so many people all over the world undertaking projects which benefit not only the rivers themselves, but also the communities that rely on them.”

The Glenelg River and the River Rhine won the Australian Riverprize and the IRF European Riverprize respectively in 2013, and have therefore automatically qualified as finalists in this year’s international category.

International River Foundation has been awarding the International Riverprize annually since 1999, with prizes awarded to large rivers such as the Mekong, to the much smaller Mara River in Kenya which has overcome an entirely different set of challenges.

Ms Melanie Ryan, International Programs Manager at the International River Foundation, said “The Riverprize is about recognising those who have made significant achievements in the restoration or protection of their rivers, lakes or wetlands. Successful applicants need to demonstrate aquatic ecosystem health improvements, socio-economic initiatives, governance, innovation and long-term vision for their waterway.”
