Half an Hour Visit – Varcoe’s Foundry, Mt Gambier

Visiting times open for new Australian theatre

You enter a room… The walls are white, the room stark and bare. There are only five of you: four other audience members and yourself. You choose a seat at one of five tables and wait. An empty plastic chair sits opposite. Then the bell on the wall sounds and five people are escorted in. You look up as someone sits opposite you and greets you by name… they know you. But who are they? And why do they know you?

HALF AN HOUR VISIT is a raw new work created by Write Club. Featuring four of Australia’s most interesting young playwrights (Caleb Lewis, Suzie Miller, Vanessa Bates and Damian Millar) along with AFI winning director and filmmaker Rob Marchand, Write Club aim to present unique storytelling experiences which are different every time.

Half An Hour Visit is the first of the new performance works in development being presented as part of Country Arts SA’s Forged Works program at the Varcoe’s Foundry in Mount Gambier.

We’re inviting a small, adventurous audience to come along and help the team by being the first audience to interact in Half An Hour Visit,” said Forged Works Producer Steve Mayhew. “It’s a rare chance to get to see a new piece of theatre at this stage of development and a way of discovering a little bit of what happens to personal relationships when people are in incarceration.”

The aim of Half An Hour Visit is to create unique one-on-one experiences between each performer and the person seated in front of them,” said Caleb Lewis. “With expert insight from the world of correctional services we have created fully realised characters. Each audience member is ‘cast’ as a character in a particular prisoner’s life. So it could be insightful, funny, scary – whatever it is I’m sure it will be an eye-opener for us and the audience.”

Hi there, just came across this while surfing around. As you can see, my maiden name is Varcoe and I am a grand-daughter of T H Varcoe. It would satisfy a thought of mine, if I would be able to see inside the foundry at some time. I await your reply, Thank you,
    Sandra Rowe nee Varcoe.

Bit rough when you are the granddaughter of this historical family business, just to have a private time looking at what was your family property.
