News from the Principal's Desk
Welcome back for Term 2 – and what a nice, wet welcome we got!
We have 3 new students this term: Hamish and Paige join our Reception students, after attending transition last term. Also new to the school is Natasha, who comes to us from Melbourne. Natasha is in Year 5. Welcome to each one – this brings our enrolments to 87.
A belated, but warm, welcome too to Marg, who stepped in to fill Jess’s place when she took maternity leave at the end of last term. Marg will be continuing in that role for the whole of term 2.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy tests will take place this term in week 3. It is most important that all students in Years 3, 5 and 7 are present at school on each of the 3 days the tests will take place. All tests will be done first thing in the morning, so it is also important that students are here on time and well rested, to help them do their very best. If you think your child may need an appointment of some sort on these days, and it cannot be arranged for a different day, please try to schedule it for the afternoon. Test results provide valuable external information at both an individual student and whole school level and we make use of them in planning our curriculum improvement focus and student support throughout the year and into the next.
NEWSLETTER NO. 7 April 30 th, 2009
Students in Reception, Year 1, 2, 4 and 6 will not be tested and will continue with their normal learning program during these days. Jan Closter and I will provide supervision for them.Building the Education Revolution
I have some most exciting news. We have been successful in our application for Round 1 funding for replacement of our old transportable classrooms. It is hopeful that we also might be able to replace the toilets with the approved funding. Of course, there are always provisos in any grant of this type – this time it’s that we don’t get any choice in the style of classrooms we will receive. We will be given a new double classroom on the “Kingscote” design (if anybody has been at the school there recently, this is the model). At this point, this is as much as I know, but I’ll keep the community informed as I learn more.
Staff Activities
Sue Hill and I will be attending a workshop on adapting the DECS online reporting software (SAS) to incorporate our own, school gathered data. Here’s hoping that it will be fairly easy to do, as the SAS provides some great comparative graphs, etc, which would make collation and interpretation of the data we collect much easier.
Next week, all staff will be attending a workshop after school on Aboriginal History since 1800. This workshop was originally scheduled for last year, but was cancelled due to lack of numbers. We have now shifted the venue to Bordertown so more of the teachers there might attend. Hopefully it will take place this year, as it has taken quite a bit of negotiation to have it rescheduled.
Finally, Sue, Kathy and I will be travelling to Adelaide on Saturday, May 9 th to attend a workshop on Boys and Writing. This should be most interesting, and will provide information for our Site Improvement Plan focus on Boys and Learning.

Change of Term Reminders
A reminder to all families that, due to food handling requirements, we are not able to reheat food that students have brought from home. Nor do we have the capacity to heat noodles, etc.
On a brighter note, the Active Parents Committee will be organising our soup days this year, and they plan to have other hot lunch choices on offer in some weeks! Information and a roster is attached at the end of this newsletter. They will need lots of volunteers for preparation and serving in order for this special activity to continue.
Our Sun Safe Policy does not require students to wear hats during yard play or activities during Terms 2 and 3. This is in line with new “healthy sun exposure” guidelines developed by the Cancer Council of Australia, who have worked closely with bone health and skin cancer experts.
“Current information indicates that at certain times of the year, when the UV is below 3, it is safe for the general population to leave hats and sunscreen off to ensure vitamin D levels are maintained.”
Their recommendation is that hats be worn from September through to April. If anyone wants more detailed information, I have a newsletter which I am happy to share.
