News from the Principal's Desk
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy tests have been the big feature of this week. The focus of students engaging in these tests has been great, as has the support and settled behaviour of their peers who are not doing the tests this year. Thank you to all students for this wonderful effort.
SAPSASA hockey, football, basketball, netball events have featured in the past week or so. Congratulations to Luella, who has been selected for the USE netball team, and to Zach, who made the USE football team. Sam and Jake tried out for hockey, but no word yet as to their success.
Although our basketball teams played to win, we weren’t fortunate enough to have either team selected to go on to further selection trials
This Friday is the big Cross Country Event. We have 27 students taking part in this event and we wish them well.
Governing Council
The first meeting of this term was held on Monday evening. The Site Improvement and Early Years Literacy Plans and the OHS&W Action Plans were approved.
A Debt Collection Policy was also approved, as this is now a required policy document. Parents are reminded that unpaid debts for Materials and Services Charges or for agreed purchases can be pursued by debt collection agencies.
NEWSLETTER NO. 8 May 14 th , 2009
Council has also been looking at our overcrowded storage and grounds sheds and, as a result, will be offering excess items for sale on a Saturday (date to be advised) when footy and netball are at home. The Active Parents Committee hosted an evening “Cupper and Natter” evening on Tuesday. Their plans for a veggie garden are well underway – look for the working bee note in this newsletter.
Building the Education Revolution
Updated news – it now seems that our original suggestion for new classrooms based on the double classroom we already have will be an acceptable alternative. This should allow plenty of funds over for new toilets, too (and not included as part of the new classroom, as was the original suggestion). Although this will mean waiting for Round 3, Council voted to do so, in hopes that we will be able to have the larger area which can house computing equipment. – the round for non-standard buildings – but we still should see some action before the end of the year.
Staff Activities
Professional development activities attended by staff recently have been excellent. We are now busily putting new information to use in development of our school curriculum offerings.
Preparation for NAPLAN testing has also been a focus of attention recently – now this is nearly finished. We can expect results to be returned during term 3.

Soccer Skills and Modified Game
PRIMARY school students keen to learn how to play soccer now have an opportunity to. Interested students will learn soccer skills and take part in a modified game. Teams will be five or six a side so everyone gets a touch and there's no standing around.
Clinic-style trainings will be on
Sundays starting May 24
at 3.30pm
at the Bordertown Primary School hockey pitch.
The trainings will run until the end of the term, but could be extended depending on numbers and enthusiasm.
Participants need to wear boots or shoes and coordinator Paul Griffin is hoping parents will get involved and help out. Paul has based the trainings around Football Federation Australia's small-sided soccer.
There hasn't been soccer in Bordertown for about 20 years, but the sport is popular in the Lower SE. Many students play soccer during recess and lunch breaks at school, but there's previously been no opportunities for children to get involved outside of school.
For more information please call Paul Griffin on 0428 104155.

Lunchtime Request
Parents, just a small request:
If you send food to school that needs to be eaten with a spoon, could you please send the spoon, too.
We are getting quite a lot of staffroom requests for spoons – and often losing them when they aren’t returned.
Thanks

Thank you to all the people who have volunteered to make some soup. Remember those helping for the first time; please bring in your soup hot (about 3-4L) with your own ladle at about 10 minutes before lunchtime into the activity area. Children bring their own cup and $2. Bread is provided.
If you are unable to come in at lunchtime on your rostered day, please make arrangements for someone else to serve your soup. Thank you.
Once again thank you for your valuable support to the school, without your assistance days like this would not be possible.
